Photographic atlas, world in pictures

Welcome! This site is designed for travel photographers, who want to share their pictures to build the photographic atlas of our planet. We create galleries talking about countries, their people, landscapes, nature and architecture. PhotographicAtlas editors make sure that galleries contain only valuable photographs and have logical orders. Additional comments related to the topic of the picture are highly recommended so that the site can work as a travel guide. Both serious travellers with large portfolios and people with just a few good pictures, who want to grow their photographic skills, are welcome to join! Pro-members will be able to use e-shop functions to license their pictures as photo stock or sell prints!

Around Annapurna

Trekking around the massive of Annapurnas in northern Nepal is one of the most nature-diverse treks in Himalayas. Green valleys with forests, snow capped mountains, deserts of Mustang, old monasteries, stupas, mani walls and religious people living very close with the nature. For some great pictures I recommend to walk the upper trail from Pisang to Manang and make a detour to Tilicho lake. You will meet much less people and landscapes here are fabulous. In the article you will find more tips for this great trek.

How to take pictures of swirling water with leaves

A couple of years ago I saw some great autumn pictures of river swirls with golden leaves at the Black Mountain Brook in the Riesen Gebirge (Krkonose) National Park, Czech Republic. The author was Jiri Havel, famous Czech landscape photographer, who lives in Trutnov, not far from the brook. Later I saw some more of these pictures, probably from the same place. I do not like to copy Havel. Therefore I try to find a similar place somewhere else. I found a very nice place in France, but was not there at the right time. Still the picture was made, since I was ready with equipment and know how. Unfortunately I was not lucky about the light.

Istanbul: On taking photographs in between the West and the East

Singing of muezzins calling the believers to mosques amidst the vibrating car traffic, people taking seats for prayers right in the streets, wealth and merely desperate poverty a couple hundred meters away. The city of contradictions where cultures and ethnics meet together. On about taking photographs in mosques, in poverty deprived slums, and also on people of the sixteen-million megapolis laying in between Europe and Asia.

People of Ladakh and Zanskar

The best rated gallery: People of Ladakh and Zanskar    goto

Andrej Macenauer:

Life of both Zanskaris and Ladakhis is very much influenced by traditions of Central Tibet.People in this region speak Ladakhi, which is considered to be a dialect of Tibetan language. Donkeymen, herders, monks, people working in field: you can meet them all while trekking in Ladakh. It is beneficial, if you travel alone or just with a friend to be able to come in touch with people. We travelled with my son and received several invitations to the families. This can bring a different dimension to your understanding of the local culture.

Sinevir Polyana

PhotographicAtlas picks: Sinevir Polyana    goto

Andrej Macenauer:

Sinevir Polyana is a forgotten village under the Horhany range. The bus is coming here only once a week. There is a school here and a post office. About 8km from the village is the Sinevir lake. With its area of 5 ha it is the biggest lake in the area. Wood from surrounding forsts was always the main source of income for local people. Today most of young men leave to earn money. They often find work as construction or forest workers in Russia or in the Czech republic, leaving their families at home.
